I was going to write this earlier but I was going through some changes that I needed. So here is what I’ll say about change…it’s needed at times, it helps us understand that the world in which we live in, is so dynamic that we have to evolve with it.
I took a look in the mirror the other week and was not very happy w/the “blob” looking at me. So I'm thinking change is not all that bad, in fact, it’s needed at times. I decided I was going to have to make some changes in my lifestyle...more specifically, my diet. That’s hard for someone that really likes...wait, I mean loves food. I so love food that I just gain 10 more pounds eating the last remaining Girl Scout cookies in my desk drawer…darn cookies…darn Girl Scouts!!
The week I ate at Kingdom Buffet, I was hoping to go to Subway…which is another blog…and was thinking, I have to start w/eating right and not overindulging to the point I’m undoing my belt buckle or unsnapping my pants to get in that last morsel of deliciousness. In fact I was only going to eat when I'm hungry and no more than my brain tells me that I can take in…”Stop” my brain would say…”You need to stop so the food is not reaching your ‘Man Boobies’”. This is direct fault of mine for always going back and piling more on! Enough about me and my dirty eating habits, I’m changing them, except for when I visit Kingdom Buffet, which is what I was writing about.
That week some of my co-workers (you darn peep toes…you know who you are), mentioned a Chinese buffet.
The mentioned of a Chinese Buffet, makes my taste buds water for MSG. “Oh come on man”, I said to myself, “You’re making changes!” They started to mention sushi…somewhat healthy I thought, a hibachi grill, okay now that has to be healthy plus they have a decent selection of other Chinese foods. I thought okay…I can just eat the sushi and I’ll grab some veggies. Well I’ve been to my fair share of buffets and let me tell you this, this one ranks right up there with nice, friendly, and yummy!! The selection of Chinese dishes number somewhere in the teens, plus they offer a salad bar, desert bar and of course sushi and hibachi bar! The food is decent and the fact the prices at lunch is around $7.50 is always a good thing. If you’re looking to add some “man boobies” (for men) or “side saddles” (for women) then this would be a great place.
I rank this place as a 7 out of 10 dish place to eat!

Busy in Mount Joy - Gus's Keystone Family Restaruant
You can tell by the clientele and how busy some places are how good the food is, or is going to be. I've been eating at Gus's for about 3 years now and each Sunday after church service this is OUR stop. We eat here with family, friends and sometimes just the 3 of us, Steph, me and of course our little nose picker.
There always seems to be a wait, which is not always a bad thing, since it gives us some time to see familiar faces and do some chitting - chatting with those we haven't seen or talked to in some time..."did you hear???", "So and So just had a baby", "Oh, my, they had a bake sale at...", "Old man what's his name just had a..." and my favorite, since my wife is from the big city of Mount Joy..."I can remember when you were...", w/the pinching of the cheeks...LOL.
Sometimes its not always about the food...but since this is a blog about food, I'll keep it as such. My favorite when we go in the morning is the Avocado Breakfast Burrito!
The shear size of it will make you stand back and wonder if this will be your dinner too. It weighs about 1 1/2 pounds, and its served with home-fries. The combo of eggs, sausage, ham, onions, green peppers and all that melted cheese w/the ohhhhh so sweet taste of avocado makes this a do over every time! The way the avocado melts in your mouth w/its sweetness, and the green peppers adds the right texture w/its crispness. But the part that makes this burrito so good is all the salt provided by the ham. That's were they get ya! Your thinking oh, my, what a great burrito...and then POW!! Right in the middle of your palate! The formula of just the right of amount of saltiness to the sweetness makes this my favorite item on menu in the morning. My son can't seem to say anything other than, "I want a grilled cheese w/chocolate milk!" morning or evening and of course they serve it to him! Steph always orders your typical homestyle breakfast of eggs over easy, which basically is a place for her to dip her toast to get the fatty goodness of the yolk, with home-fries (fried) and bacon w/toast. All the prices are reasonable for the 3 of us around $20 w/tip.
Now for dinners...that will have to be something you experience on your own. They make some really good soups, which they change everyday. They provide a nice seafood menu, along w/some Greek dishes and the food is always fresh and made homemade. If your looking for a nice place to eat in Mount Joy, that offers some nice smiles and maybe some familiar faces...This is the spot!

Downtown Lancaster - Rice N Beans
Okay diners and food connoisseurs there is a place that I’m dying to tell you about!!!
It sits on a very busy street in Lancaster City and resides next to the bus station; parking may be the only downside of this very fine, Latin restaurant – Rice and Beans.
The discovery of this place happen on a event called “1st Friday” basically a way for the city to allow shops to stay open later and get consumer to spend more money…great in the spring and summer…really sucks in the fall and winter, unless you like the cold and snowed filled streets!
Me and of course my ever fateful side kick and wife, Steph were once again w/our dear friends and (I guess to think about it some…food connoisseurs as well) were in the City for this 1st Friday event this past spring. The shops at times offer adult beverages to, for which I believe I might have indulged in several, well maybe several dozen drinks and was starting to feel the effects of these drinks and knew it was going to be time to end the party early or go get something to eat!
Stumbling…I mean walking up the street our friends had suggested Rice and Beans (from this point forward I will be abbreviating as RNB). Our friend Angel who happens to be Latin and knows a thing or two about Latin Cuisine suggested we get the pork. I’ve watch enough “Food Network” shows to know that the pork is the real deal.
I have to say, that this might be the finest roasted pork I’ve ever eaten!! It’s so moist, seasoned w/just the right stuff (for which I don’t believe I’ll get the formula for – sorry Darren) and is cooked w/the skin on…it makes you want to slap your momma! If you’re lucky enough you might be able to get a piece of skin that’s crispy, which is like a potatoes chip, but made from the skin of a pig. I know, what you’re thinking, no way. But I say don’t knock it, until you try it. In fact the owner has told me that some patrons come in just for the skin. This pork is so good that I’ve talked with Steph about cancelling our annual New Year Day lunch of Pork and Sauerkraut for rice, beans and Pork Latin Style!
I’ve been privileged enough to work w/some that has a connoisseur’s attitude about their food and have really taken a liken to this fine establishment. In fact one consultant that worked with us was so in love w/the place that he would eat their 2-3times a week when he was in town. He would always order his RNB w/extra gravy; by the way, the gravy is the drippings from the stewed chicken and can be quite delicious when added to your RNB.
Today something totally new came out…a special sauce. It was made of mayonnaise, w/some garlic, and other seasonings…OMG! How good it was on the fried plantains. I might just eat at RNB from now on exclusively. There is always a draw to go back for more. DARN RNB…another place that had me at “HELLO”!
The best part about this establishment is that every time that I’ve gone there, the flavor, the way it’s made is always the same. The owners are very accommodating and friendly. But the best part…the prices are reasonable…daily lunch w/a soda pop and tip = $7.50.
Now I don’t want anyone to read this and think that I just made this place out to be the Ritz Carlton!! It’s far from that, it’s a clean restaurant that seats about 20-25 at a time (if they’re lucky) and always has good Latin food. I’ve not ventured far from the “PORK” but they do serve other dishes as well; such as chicken, fish, beef…and even subs.
I would say if you in the mood for some authentic Latin comfort food this is your place…in fact…this is the only place!
Special thanks to my dear friends who introduced us to this great restaurant; Stacie and Angel and to my co-workers who dare take a walk on the wrong side of town to eat something different.

Kyma Seafood & Johnny's Bar and Steakhouse - Denver PA
Dear fellow dinners and lover’s of great food,
Here is my latest find… Kyma Seafood Grill. The evening started off as wanting a great steak…and it end up being a great night of not only Turf…but Surf!
One of my favorite locations is Johnny’s Bar and Steakhouse in Denver PA, as it makes some of the best steaks in Lancaster County and on occasion you might be able to get an Australian Kobe Beef Steak.
We (my wife and a dear couple friend) decided this was going to be the place to eat, and upon getting there was told it would be an HOUR and HALF…WTF!! Okay…I guess that can be quite extreme, as the place is really, really, good, and everyone and their brothers want to eat there! Should’ve known that if the food is good, the wait is going to be long. The line went out the door and the parking lot was packed. We were told that we could dine upstairs in their newer seafood establishment KYMA’s (Greek for wave) if we like…and the wait time was shorter (45 minutes). We decide maybe turf was not going to be in our foreseeable future that night…so bring on the SURF!
So upstairs we went! To a beautiful ,oceanic type of flair décor restaurant. Very hip w/it’s neon lights and it’s tile floors, leather booths, and big Wave mural. After $40 dollars of drinks (some really good martinis) and some pleasant conversation w/laughs, we were seated.
We started off w/the Mussels…now for those that like them, know that from time to time, you will find a place that will overcook them. They can become quite chewy…like eating an old tire from the junkyard. Not the case here…the mussels type makes the different! The little Prince Edward or sooooo melt in your mouth good, done just right. The next appetizer was a crab, lobster spinach artichoke dip. Okay here’s where they had me at “HELLO”!!! The crab and lobster ratio to other fillers was well…no fillers!!! It might be the best warm dip I’ve ever had! Warm and cheesy, w/just the right amount of artichoke to give it that certain kick and flavor.
I ordered the Kyma/Shrimp Scampi…I just want to say that the seafood is done spot on! Not overcooked, done w/the right seasonings and the freshness makes the differences. My wife order the Porter House steak (upon my request) as I wanted some steak too!! She ate the filet mignon, and I had some of the NY strip…I ended up giving her my lobster tail (South African Lobster – consider to many as the world’s premiere lobster), part of my special of Shrimp ravioli and Shrimp scampi. The steaks by the way are from Johnny’s downstairs and were done to our liking…med rare. No steak sauce needed here!! I would say this is a must try and my suggestion would be go to Kyma’s as the wait time is shorter, and if you want a steak…ask for a Johnny’s menu (insider’s tip).
This is now the best steak/seafood place (opinion only) in Lancaster County.
The evening in a whole was a rather inexpensive evening for a dinner that lasted almost 3 hours. Total bill w/drinks was slightly over $100 for me and my wife!
